Judith C. Gilbertson
COON VALLEY, Wis. - Judith C. Gilbertson, 93, of Coon
Valley died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at her home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1913, to Joseph and Clara
(Strangstalien) Johnson in rural Westby, Wis. She was
baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church.
On Aug. 29, 1936, she and Louis M. Gilbertson were
married at the Lutheran parsonage in Westby. They
operated an A&W root beer business at Decorah, Iowa,
until the fall of 1942 when Louis received his army
draft notice. From 1943 to 1946, she worked in a defense
plant in Milwaukee building machine gun turret motors
for the Navy. After WWII, they returned to Coon Valley,
and she was secretary/treasurer for the family-owned
construction firm of Gilbertson Bros. Inc. until
retiring in 1973. Louis died Feb. 21, 2000.
Judith was an accomplished seamstress and maintained a
lifetime interest in fashion design and clothing
construction, textiles and needlework.
Survivors include one daughter, Jenny Gilbertson of
Union Grove, Wis.; a sister, Eva (Clinton) Gullord of La
Crosse; a brother, Thelmer Johnson of Coon Valley; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, preceding
her in death were a sister, Alida Josephine Jacobson,
and three brothers, Argyle Johnson, Jimmy Johnson and
Lloyd Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16,
in Coon Valley Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mitzi Miyamoto
will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitations will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Seland
Funeral Home in Coon Valley and from 12:30 p.m. until
the time of services Sunday at the church. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to the Vernon Memorial
Hospice Program.

Sailed on the Hanna Parr from Oslo, Norway on 12 Apr 1868. Journey took 22 weeks due to hurricane damage to the Hanna Parr. Damage repaired in Limerick, Ireland, before resuming sail to Quebec and then to Chicago.

COON VALLEY - Thelmer “TJ” Odin Johnson, 92, of Coon Valley died Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Bethany St. Joseph Nursing Center in La Crosse.
He was born March 15, 1922, to Joseph and Clara (Strangstalien) Johnson in rural Westby. He was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church.
Thelmer worked on the family farm until being drafted into the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater on the island of Saipan, for his entire tour of duty.
After returning from military service he returned to farming in rural Cashton. In 1960, he moved to Coon Valley, and worked as a carpenter for Gilbertson Bros. Construction until he retired. He was an accomplished woodworker and maintained a lifetime interest in that hobby. Gardening was another lifelong interest. He continued planting his vegetable gardens until 2014, giving loving attention to his favorite tomatoes.
Survivors include nieces, Jenny Gilbertson of Coon Valley, Jean (Gullord) Seiter of Hurley, Wis., Juanne Pesick of Hemet, Calif., Janice (Johnson) Peterson of Viroqua, JoNett (Johnson) Werch of Vale, Ariz., Rebecca (Johnson) Miech of Yorba Linda, Calif., Janet (Johnson) Revles of El Cajos, Calif., Shelly (Johnson) of Washington; nephews, Clarian Jacobson of Milwaukee, Carlan Gullord of Minneapolis, Dr. Martin Johnson of Phoenix, Lawrence Johnson of Texas, Robert Johnson of Arizona, and Andrew Johnson of Arizona.
In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were siblings, Argyle Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Lloyd Johnson, Alida Josephine Jacobson, Judith Gilbertson and Eva Gullord; and nephews, Harlan Johnson and Donovan Jacobson,
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Vang Lutheran Church, with visitation from noon until the time of services. The Rev. Dan Wollman will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the Coon Valley American Legion Post #116, will be in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank the palliative care staff at Bethany St. Joseph Nursing Center in La Crosse. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bland Bekkedal Hospice Center in Viroqua, or to the Knutson Memorial Library in Coon Valley.
